At the heart of Kahiga-ini, Tetu, Nyeri County, lies a sacred piece of Kenya’s history — the very spot where Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi, the legendary freedom fighter, was shot and captured. This site, steeped in the memory of sacrifice and resilience, continues to echo the spirit of liberation that birthed our nation.
Today, that spirit lives on through the Dedan Kimathi Foundation’s Environmental Conservation Team from Mathira, who have embarked on a mission to restore and preserve this monument and sanctuary. Their work — clearing bushes, cleaning pathways, and nurturing the natural environment — is not just about beautification; it is a profound act of remembrance and renewal.
Honouring History Through Action
The team’s efforts form part of the Foundation’s build-up activities toward the 106th Posthumous Birthday of Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi, to be commemorated on 31st October 2026. Each swing of the machete and each cleared patch of earth symbolizes a commitment to protecting our environment, preserving our history, and honouring our heroes.As the team works amidst the tranquil greenery of Kahiga-ini, they embody the Foundation’s guiding philosophy — that freedom and sustainability are inseparable. The land our heroes fought for must remain fertile, protected, and respected.
The Green Freedom
The Dedan Kimathi Foundation’s motto, “The Green Freedom,” captures this vision perfectly.
