Proper Waste Management to Lessen Climate Change Impact

F. M. DEDAN KIMATHI 67TH ANNIVERSARY CONSERVATION WEEK AT ENGINEER, NYANDARUA COUNTY.

Every year, an estimate of 11.2 billion tonnes of waste is produced. A great percentage ends up in land fills. As the organic waste decomposes, methane, a green house gas, is produced. Releasing it to the atmosphere increases global warming as the gases trap the heat on earth surface.

In realization of the damage improper waste disposal poses to our environment and humanity, we are compelled to intervene in ensuring proper waste collection and disposal.

In Kenyan towns, garbage heaps are a common sight caused by either lack of collection bins, insufficient bins, lack of proper waste collection knowledge or ignorance by the waste generators. Illegal dumping in most of business and residential areas becomes an eyesore and poses a significant health hazard in regard to outbreak of diseases;not forgetting the air pollution by odor produced during decomposition.

Dedan Kimathi Foundation has developed keen interest in conducting town clean ups and sensitizing the public on proper waste disposal to maintain clean, healthy and appealing work and living environment. In this light, Dedan Kimathi Foundation is collaborating with Nyandarua County government to hold the ‘Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi 67th Anniversary Conservation Week’ at Engineer Ward in Kinangop Sub- County. Set to start from Tuesday 13th February 2024, the 5 day series of activities will bring together enthusiastic environmental groups and individuals to a high degree clean up gear ranging from litter picking, unclogging of the town drainage systems, slashing of overgrown weeds and grasses along the roads and dumping areas, removal of the illegal dumping sites, clearing of the waste holding areas and sensitizing the residents on the need to keep the environment clean.

This noble series of activities targets to put Nyandarua County at a good position in the conservation map as the nation commemorates F. M. Dedan Kimathi’s 67th Anniversary since execution by the British Colonialists on 18th February of 1957.
