Living the Presidential Tree Growing Call

Eid-ul-Fitr marks the joyful end of Ramadan with prayers, feasting, and generosity among Muslims worldwide. As a national holiday in Kenya, it’s a perfect day for everyone to celebrate, relax, and enjoy in their own way!

This year, Dedan Kimathi Foundation, Mau Mau War Veterans Association, Kenya Forest Service and the Station CFA celebrated the holiday planting trees in Kabage Forest section of the Aberdare National Park. Motivated by the heavy rains being experienced in a good number of counties in Kenya, the team planted 1500 indigenous trees to rehabilitate 1.5 ha of the park in efforts to ensure forests are well conserved to protect wildlife.

Mau Mau War veterans with membership drawn from all the 47 Kenyan Counties saw groups of patriotic Kenyans assemble in Nyeri from Kisumu, Trans Nzoia, Nyandarua, Makueni, Bungoma and Nairobi counties in solidarity with the president’s tree growing and forest restoration campaign to grow 15billion trees by 2032. Making his remarks during the planting exercise, Dedan Kimathi Foundation environment team leader Dickson Maina, stated the under appreciated power of concerted efforts to mitigate climate change negative effects. He as well reminded the participants that the freedom of Kenya was won collectively by all Kenyan communities making Mau Mau a tribeless movement.

Commitment to Climate Action and Environmental Conservation

Reflecting on the history of the Kenyan liberation by the Mau Mau, the speeches made later at Dedan Kimathi Mau Mau Memorial Park-Kahiga-ini highly portrayed commitments of the unwavering support Mau Mau and the freedom fighters families are affording the government in environmental conservation to cushion Kenyans from the life-threatening effects of climate change which require very immediate action.

In his remarks, Mau Mau War Veterans National Coordinator Mr. John Macharia, credited Dedan Kimathi Foundation for setting sustainable tree growing pace by growing close to 6 million trees in 27 counties since 2019. He assured the Foundation of his association’s labor support in all the 47 counties to increase the afforestation impact to actualize the national target.
