Ilkiremisho Comprehensive School Mentorship, Humanitarian & Tree Planting Day (Kajiado Central)

Kajiado County is well know as a county of livestock rearing. Residents, mainly the Maasai, are reputable pastoralists who earn their livelihood from keeping livestock. It has hot climatic condition making tree growing an uphill task requiring utmost commitment.

Among the challenges affecting the tree cover in the county include tree cutting for charcoal burning as an alternative source of income, animal browsing of young trees after planting and low survival rate of planted trees due to scorching sun. At times, droughts occur in the county causing extreme hunger and loss of livestock.

Today, Thursday 17th October 2024, Dedan Kimathi Foundation conducted an environmental mentorship session with Ilkiremisho Comprehensive School to educate the learners, teaching staff, parents and the community on the necessity of sustainable tree growing in the area. Marking the fourth Environmental visit in the ASAL status county, the Foundation Environment Conservation team led the participants in planting neem trees in the school compound while persuading them to ensure they grow trees in their homes too.

The event, held in partnership with Toto Kalezi Foundation, Indoinyo Youth Alliance and the office of Dalalekutuk (Dallas) ward, also included learners mentorship on academic excellence, decision making, career choice and reproductive health among other topics.

Toto Kalezi Foundation donated sanitary towels, toilet papers and maize flour for the pupils and parents ahead of the school closing ceremony. Besides the environmental role DKF was playing, the team took part in the mentorship sessions and also delivered four cartons of reading books donated by Lions Club Nairobi Greater for the event.

As the month of October draws towards the end, Dedan Kimathi Foundation is on high gear environmental and humanitarian gear in honor of F. M Dedan Kimathi whose 104th Posthumous birthday will be marked on 31st October. The hero set the patriotism bar quite high making his legacy extremely vital to build on in honor of his sacrifices for this great nation.
