F.M. Dedan Kimathi’s104th Posthumous Birthday Greening Planning~Nyandarua County Edition

Dedan Kimathi Foundation strongly believes that the freedom of this republic was won collectively by all Kenyans. In this light, it pursues unity of all Kenyans in celebrating the fighters whose love for the nation exceeded their own.

As a national hero, DKF works in an accommodative way to ensure all Kenyan regions learn the right history and appreciate the vital role Dedan Kimathi played with other legendary fighters to reclaim our land and freedom.

In this year’s 104th Posthumous birthday, the Foundation is planning a nationwide series of tree growing activities to honor the hero. Taking cognizance of the contribution of forests in the guerrilla warfare, the urge to increase tree cover guided by the philosophy ‘Bringing Aberdares Close to Our Homes’ gains steady momentum.

Planning for this important day to be marked on 31st October had the Foundation Environment Conservation team visit Nyandarua County Forest Conservator’s office to discuss the calendar of tree growing activities in the county ahead of the rains. The team took a guided walk in the vast tree nursery located within the compound and was amused by the progress of the tree seedlings being raised for planting in the coming short rains.

Mr. Wambugu; the nursery incharge, could not hold his gratitude for the two week voluntary labor the Foundation team offered in expanding the tree nursery earlier last year.

With speed, the nursery has embraced biodegradable potting tubes to reduce plastic waste. In addition, the nursery has several Swaziland seedlings beds in which trees are raised without any potting bags to reduce waste generation. Few polythene bags are well incinerated to reduce carbon emission.

The team also visited South Kinangop Forest Station for meeting with the station manager and the service team. The meeting deliberated on tree growing and forests restoration in which Dedan Kimathi Offered to mobilize labor for planting 58,000 trees in the forest to replace the ones harvested recently. Site preparations in the identified sites is set to begin mid September to allow smooth growing when the rains strike.

Zealously devoted to support the 15 billion national tree growing and restoration campaign to combat climate change, DKF extends the conservation call for collective action by all Kenyans to make the nation greener and more habitable.
