DKF Heightened Tree Growing Action
As the opening of the October – December short rains season, Dedan Kimathi Foundation marked Mazingira day on 10th October 2024 by planting 35,000 trees in Sasumua Dam riparian, Ndothua Comprehensive School, Ndothua Secondary, Sasumua Secondary and Njabini Boys High school all in South Kinangop in Nyandarua County.
Determined to move closer to 1 million trees target set for the season, the Foundation Environment Conservation team welcomed the heavy rains being received in the country with unmatched readiness to grow more trees. The team spent the day, Saturday 19th October 2024, offering environment conservation education to students in Magumu High and Linet Girls Secondary school both in Magumu Ward. In both, the team led the students and teachers in planting exotic trees donated by Kenya Forest Service in the schools farms for woodlots.
Applying the spirit of ‘the power of one’ towards attainment of 30% national tree cover by 2032, the foundation recognizes the vital contribution of farmers in tree growing. Empowering farmers with tree growing education serves as a great step towards increased environmental action. In this regard, the team led a group of farmers in Engineer area in establishing a cypress plantation in one of their farms.
”Rains to us mean a time to grow more trees, a time to bend a knee and make our hands dirty for the sake of the 15 billion trees for our country, “said the Foundation CEO, Ms. Evelyn Kimathi during Mazingira Day tree planting at the Sasumua dam riparian.
