DKF ‘Greening Series 2024’ Towards 30% Tree Cover

As the world attention continues to pressure action towards climate change mitigation, Kenya’s ambitious target to grow 15 billion trees in the next 10 years keeps the country’s environmentalists yearning to do more in the environment conservation arena.

Sustainable tree growing has been identified as a simple yet very efficient way of reducing carbon in the atmosphere hence reducing the climate change impact a great extent.

Under the 10-year framework of collaboration signed between Dedan Kimathi Foundation and Kenya Forest Service, the former continues to conduct and support tree growing activities in forest lands. Today, Friday 26th January 2024, Dedan Kimathi Foundation environment conservation team led the KFS rangers, foresters and South Kinangop Community Forest Association members in a 7,000 indigenous tree planting exercise. The activity, in which more than 95% of the trees planted were Juniperus procera, took place at Kiamweri beat.

Representing the Forest Station manager, Inspector Daniel Moi urged the community members to take good care of the trees planted when farming. He further instructed the grazers to ensure their livestock do not access the area under Cultivation.

Speaking on behalf of the Foundation CEO, the environment team leader, Dickson Maina, termed the planting as one in a million steps towards sustainable tree growing. He assured the service undivided commitment in both afforestation and refforestation activities..

This is one in tens of activities planned for the January and February conservation period as the Foundation heads towards the 67th Anniversary of the F. M. Dedan Kimathi.
