Dedan Kimathi Foundation and Kenya Defense Forces Tree Growing in Kamulu – Nairobi
Tree planting is best done during the rainy season for highest survival and sustainability. With the ambitious presidential 30% national tree cover directive, various departments have been given targets to ensure the target is achieved.
Tuesday 23rd April 2024 was a bee-busy tree growing day in Kamulu Location in Kasarani – Nairobi. Dedan Kimathi Foundation, Kenya Defence Forces Thika Engineers Brigade and National Government Administration Officers well represented by Kamulu senior Chief collaborated with the community to plant 10,000 tree seedlings in public spaces in the location.
Drumvale Secondary, Drumvale Primary, Queen of Peace Education Centre, Kwetu Home of Peace Childrens home were the beneficiaries of the voluntary initiative in Kamulu sub-location while Athi Primary, Ng’undu Primary, Kamulu Chief’s Office and Nile Road Girls Boarding benefitted in Ng’undu sub-location.
To guarantee positive results, the Brigade donated very suitable species for the area that tends to be dry most times of the year. Mexican green ash, Kenya croton, jacaranda, casuarina, Nile tulip (Markhamia lutea) and Nandi flame were among the species planted and donated to the community members to grow in their private spaces.
Mr. Maina, the area senior chief, promised his commitment to ensure all the trees planted would be well taken care of through sufficient watering during the hot season by seeing to it that all the sites attended acquire reliable water sources. His words were commended by the Brigade team leader Lieutenant Mwangi. He called for continued partnerships to grow trees towards the coveted 30% tree cover. He assured the beneficiaries of his brigade’s readiness to supply them with tree seedlings anytime soil moisture content is good for planting.
Dedan Kimathi Foundation C.E.O, Ms. Evelyn W Kimathi, lauded the soldiers for their resilience and high level allegiance to the presidential 15 billion tree growing call despite the challenging tragic loss of the Chief of Defence forces among other gallant soldiers in a fatal chopper crash on 18th April, just 4 days before the activity. She termed their input as selfless and vowed to ensure seamless collaboration with the brigade towards attainment of their target in the 450 million trees the military has been directed to grow.
