Despite all our technological advances we are completely dependent on healthy and vibrant ecosystems for our water, food, medicines, clothes, fuel, shelter and energy, just to name a few. From nature-based solutions to climate, health issues, food and water security, and sustainable livelihoods, biodiversity is the foundation upon which we can build back better. That is the main message from the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), key international instrument for sustainable development.
Today we celebrated Biodiversity Day graced by Sicily Kariuki the Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation and Irrigationn and a staunch supporter of global biodiversity. Our CEO, Evelyn Kimathi donated 1000 tree seedlings from our tree nursery towards Worlds Biodiversity Day to flourish this important human activity. This year 2021 the theme is “We’re part of the solution”
Nature, as we know it, is dependent on a huge variety of life forms – different habitats, a big variety of species, and a great genetic variation within the species – for the earth’s ecosystem to function. If the diversity is threatened, the ecosystems that gives us clean water, crops, and fertile soils would simply collapse.
If we do not reverse the current trend with diminishing biodiversity, we simply threaten our own existence.
Today, one million animals and plant species are threatened with extinction and everyday species are lost to never come back. It is both a sad and scary thought, but did you know that biodiversity is a prerequisite for human survival?
Biodiversity loss, through land degradation and drought, is a serious threat to the sustainable development activities across the continent of Africa. This is often exacerbated by the lack of knowledge and skills on sustainable land management practices and forest biodiversity conservation. Low levels of awareness and sensitization of the advantages of land restoration among some, combined with poor regulation of resources, and lack of consideration for the interests of local communities, often leads to poor public support and participation towards conservation of natural resources.
We encourage you all to plant more trees to promote environmental conservation and improve livelihoods for this generation and future generations too.
