Dedan Kimathi Foundation Tharaka Nithi Tree Growing ~Day 3

Drawing Inspiration from Freedom Struggle Resilience

From the high-voltage freedom struggle resilience of national liberators like Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi Wachiuri, our Foundation borrows heavily on the spirit of consistency and resilience. This spirit drives our year-long environmental conservation activities. Through our relentless efforts, we continue to impact communities, enabling them to embrace climate change mitigation practices, particularly sustainable tree growing.

Day 3 in Tharaka South: Tree Growing Progress

On Friday 6th December 2024, the Foundation’s environmental conservation team spent its third day in Tharaka South planting trees in public schools alongside the local community. With a target of growing 10,000 trees by the end of following day, the team worked tirelessly throughout the day. They successfully planted half the targeted figure, distributed as follows:

  1. Mwanyani Comprehensive (1,000 trees)
  2. CCM Kiuguni Primary (500 trees)
  3. Matakiri Primary (500 trees)
  4. Nkondi Special Needs School (500 trees)

Additionally, 1,000 tree seedlings were distributed to individuals with high-growing potential to plant on their farms.

Tree Species for High Survival Rates

The species planted include Leucaena leucocephala, Tamarindus indica, Terminalia prunoides, Moringa oleifera, and Azadirachta indica (Neem). These species were carefully selected for their suitability to the growing sites, ensuring high survival rates when properly cared for.

Partnership with Kenya Forest Service

This series of activities was held in partnership with the Kenya Forest Service, which has been instrumental in providing high-quality tree seedlings for the entire exercise. Additionally, they offered invaluable technical support for tree growing.

Contributing to National Tree Cover Targets

The war on climate change through tree growing remains a priority for our Foundation. Each day brings us closer to the presidential ambitious target of achieving 30% national tree cover by growing 15 billion trees by 2032.

The Role of Collective Efforts

We firmly believe that concerted efforts between the government, state and non-state actors, and patriotic citizens form the most crucial ingredient to reducing carbon emissions and ultimately winning the war against climate change.
