Celebrating Mazingira Day 2024

GREENING OUR NEIGHBOURHOOD

To actualize the 15 billion tree growing plan, the government has continued to ensure the National Tree Growing and Restoration Campaign remains fully enhanced.

This Thursday, 10th October 2024, the country will be marking the second Mazingira Day, a public holiday set aside to create environmental impact through environmental education and tree growing.

As a strong supporter of the journey towards 30% national tree cover by year 2032, Dedan Kimathi Foundation has continued to lay proper plans to execute a series of tree planting activities in a select number of public sites.

Today, the environmental team conducted Progress Monitoring and Evaluation (PME) activities in previously planted public spaces. Among the places visited were, Githinji Comprehensive school, St. Christopher’s Comprehensive and Secondary, Linet Girls’ High school, Ndothua Comprehensive and Secondary. The team was pleased with the trees progress with all the visited institutions registering survival rates above 85%.

The good results are out of shear hard-work of the students and pupils who adopted the trees. Proper watering and cultivating under the trees were reported as the main reasons behind 100% survival rate in St. Christopher Comprehensive school.

In collaboration with other partners such as CKL Africa Ltd; the foundation plans to conduct a greening caravan this Thursday by which more than 10,000 trees will be planted in the identified sites to celebrate Mazingira Day.

To increase the impact, the foundation extends the call to conserve the environment through tree growing on that day to the general public countrywide.
