Heroes Green Legacy
Borderless Conservation in Honor of F.M Dedan Kimathi and Legend Tom Mboya
Dedan Kimathi Foundation journey of commitment to support the government to attain 30% tree cover remains one of our highest mandates as the battle on climate change continues to take shape. Kimathi’s Legacy of selflessness as the senior military and spiritual leader of the Kenya Lands and Freedom Army during the colonial fight reflects in Tom Mboya’s pan africanism that saw the tribe less trade unionist strive to make Kenya economically great till his political assassination in 1969.
In partnership with Green Heroes Organization and Tom Mboya University Environmental club, Dedan Kimathi Foundation conducted a 2,000 exotic tree planting exercise at Tom Mboya University in honor of the two heroes who proved to be great friends of nature. As international icons, the Foundation continues a borderless environmental Conservation series of activities to heighten balanced climate change sensitization and action nationally.
Tom Mboya University acknowledges the immense contribution of the heroes and has allocated Dedan Kimathi Foundation and Homabay based Green Heroes Organization a vast space to establish memorial parks for the two legends through the university environmental club. This comes at a time when the Foundation green army team intensifies tree growing activities in the county striving to grow 1.5 million trees each year till 2032 to reach the national target from the current 3.18%.
In the advantage of the working partnership with the Kenya Forest Service and collaboration with Equity Group Foundation Environmental program; the Foundation ‘Adopt a Tree’ greening series in 71 schools in Homabay sub county for the April rains is underway.
Speaking after the tree planting activity, guests urged the young generation to embrace environment conservation as their responsibility to cushion the future generation against the growing negative impacts of climate change basing it on Prof. Wangari Maathai’s call for environmental consciousness stating that price of environmental degradation befalls those who did not cause it.
Homabay County Forest Conservator, Madam Sharon Cheruget, requested a hand of the partners of the day to keep trees growing to cool the environment for increased agricultural production and reduce global warming through carbon absorption and storage. Her sentiments were seconded by Tom Mboya’s younger brother Mr. Paul Ndiege, doubling as the curator at the Tom Mboya Mausoleum in Rusinga Island where the legend was buried and history preserved. Mr. Salim Nyauke, Homabay township assistant chief advised the university students to cease drug consumption and divert that energy to support National Government Administration Officers to grow trees.
Also present in the activity were Kenya Red Cross Volunteers, Homabay County Scouts representative, Non State Actors secretary general, County government gender department representative and NEMA among others.
