CLEARING DRAINAGE SYSTEMS AS RAINS BUCKET DOWN.
DKF COLLABORATES WITH KIAMBU COUNTY IN GITARU MARKET CLEAN UP; KABETE SUB COUNTY IN KIAMBU
For about a couple of weeks, our country has been receiving some heavy rains after quite a long period of dry spell. The rains have highly led to an increase in tree planting as the soil moisture build up has been good for growth.
However, the rains, have found our drainage systems unready for the overflow of the rain water due to improper disposal of plastic wastes and silting blocking the drainage systems. This has in turn caused very unhealthy working environment for Gitaru market roadside sellers who have erected their stalls beside the drainage ditches. Most of them are forced to close business as customers experience difficulties reaching their stalls when rains pour.
Dedan Kimathi Foundation in pursuit of solution to that challenge took part in a clean up activity at Giraru Market and heavily engaged in unblocking the water ways beside the road. The monthly event hosted by Kiambu County Government attracted the Public works CECM Hon. Mburu Kang’ethe, Chief Officer Peninah from the Office of the First Lady Kiambu and Gitaru Ward MCA Hon. Jane Thogori among other leaders.
Backing up each other, the leaders called upon Kenyans especially the youth to engage in nation building activities. Hon. Thogori lauded the DKF Green Army for setting a great example through volunteering to grow trees and conduct clean ups to create a greener, cleaner environment. She further requested the team to collaborate with her office to green the ward.
Mr. Dickson Maina, DKF environment conservation team leader, assured that the foundation team would continue taking part in afforestation and clean ups to ensure that Kenyans continue enjoying the benefits of a well forested, clean environment. He urged the participants to take advantage of the falling rains to grow as many trees as can be sustained terming the season as the best to support the 15bn presidential tree planting plan.
Thanking the participants for engaging in the noble task, Kabete Sub County Environment Officer Ms. Jane Ng’, ang’a urged the youth to follow the Dedan Kimathi Foundation example and volunteer in nation building activities to beat the unemployment challenge.
